An important pointer is clearly seen if there are any consequences to your personality if you voice anything outside the groupthink. If there is a strong sense that questioning is seen as a negative which may bring consequences. Are you in a religion led by a few people who 'hear from God' for your life or that if the group? Is there shame, guilt and fear to pose questions even to yourself?
These are the danger signs that you may have lost your personal identity in place for control by others.
- Is there a cost to break away from your religion?
- Would you be isolated or shunned?
- Do you have to adhere to a set of rules to belong and should you step outside those rules would you pay a heavy emotional price?
- A key indicator that brings people to question such religious practices is where the religious structure separates believers from non believers. The former destined for heaven and the later for hell.
