Personality testing

The word test can be misleading in that there is no testing involved. In this case, it is a questioner we use that may clarify areas a client may find the easiest to work on if they are stuck. It is used at the client’s request only and to enhance personal development as a way forward. Personality testing is a method of looking at the traits that you tend to operate out of. A trait of your personality is your default way of being in each situation. For example, if you thrive on interacting with others and draw energy from those interactions then it could be reasonably said that one personality trait you have is that you are extraverted. However, this is a very broad-brush strokes example. This is because no two extraverts encompass this trait to the same extent. This is where personality testing helps. The results will give a good indication of to what degree you, in the case above are extroverted out of a score of 100.

Personality Traits

There are several traits which are considered in a personality test and the degree to which any individual person experiences that trait. The test is a predictor of the individual on each trait as well as, and most importantly, the mix and degree of the different traits and how they interact with each other. For every person that takes the test, there are one of a possible 100,000 possible results. Predictor, is the keyword here, as it is a subjective test that has merit in its findings as many people usually agree with the findings in a way, they themselves agree has a good degree of accuracy and broadly identify with the results.

So how does that help us in the therapeutic setting?

The
answer lies in what we are using the test for and how we apply the test results. In the case of therapy then the results are for the client to see to what extent they agree with the findings. From there a client can get a much better understanding of themselves and identify where to draw strengths from in the therapeutic journey. Cork Counselling Clinic offers person cantered integrative therapy. That is where the client brings to therapy what emotional distress they are experiencing, and the agenda is set by the client. We come from the place that a client is a whole person who holds the answers, direction and way forward for their lives within themselves. The personality test is used for clients in certain situations to help them, help themselves move forward more quickly and discover areas of strength that can be used to empower the client integrate the change a client wishes to bring in their life.

The personality tests we use are not evaluated by the therapist but used as a tool for the client themselves. It assists the client get a clearer picture of themselves and where to draw strengths from, as well as areas where the client may be struggling that can be addressed. It is a forward-facing therapeutic tool that helps empower the therapeutic process in certain instances.
