Life Coaching:
Coaching is a forward-facing goal-specific process where there is a collaboration between the client and the Coach. Looking at the clients past is brief, so as to get a snapshot of how the client arrived at where he or she is now. People who prefer the approach of coaching would be those who are presenting with specific issues that they want to solve. It differs from counselling where each week may be about a different issue impacting on the client.
An example where coaching can be very rewarding is for separation or divorce where the client is very goal specific in navigating their way through the process.

The client over a number of sessions establishes and clarifies specific goals and outcomes that they want to achieve. This then becomes the focus and target of the coaching process.
Time is taken to break down each goal into manageable and quantifiable steps so that the client can positively track their progress until each goal is achieved.
Achieving your goal is not the end of the coaching approach. Goals are reached normally just beyond the half way point. Establishing lasting change in each goal becomes the focus.
Coaching involves active exercises which the client engages in between sessions. For example, a person who has a goal of overcoming social anxiety will be given exercises where gradual exposure and interaction with others is the take home task for the next session. The task will be just a little beyond the clients comfort zone but not in any way so far beyond that it becomes unattainable.
